I put a new-to-me motor in my '99 Whizzer and have tried to use an automatic clutch that I purchased from Whizzer Paul. It seems to be always engaged and doesn't allow pedaling. It free-wheels if it's turned backward. With Paul gone now, anyone have similar experiences?

The clutch has a one way bearing that allows you to "pedal" to start the bike. As you have found, you can roll the bike backwards without the clutch engaging... If the clutch was not engaged at rest, you could not be able to Pedal start the bike. Most of us "kick" start the bike while on the stand with the back wheel up in the air. Auto clutch is easier as you don't need to pull the clutch lever and the compression release at the same time. Many of us have installed a rear wheel with drum brake and we use the clutch lever as a second brake lever.

I have only run the bike on the stand, as of yet, because seems like once I start the engine, the auto-clutch is fully engaged so it'll just take off
out from under me. With the auto clutch what happens when you want to come to a stop and then want to take off again. It seems that the motor will just stall out. With it running on the stand, I can't stop the rear wheel with my foot, at all...I had thought that it would be barely engaged enough to start the motor but slip enough to stop and have the engine still run...

When I start my bike on the stand. I pull the rear brake.... but I have a drum brake... at a stop light the weight on the rear wheel lets the clutch "slip" if you have the coaster brake, then you might be better off pedaling the bike to start it. Perhaps Wrench will chime in as he has much more experience and understanding of the auto clutches.

I got auto clutch from 2005 & 2006 and they're a little different than the Auto Clutch from Whizzer Paul

With the Clutch from Whizzer Paul the bolt that bolts the clutch to the clutch arm should only be tightened finger tight
It it's too tight the clutch won't spin freely

Only finger tight because the spacer in between the two 6901 bearings on the center shaft is a little short
So over tightening the clutch bolt will bind the bearings

BTW to take the Whizzer Paul Clutch apart, there is a snap ring under the front grease seal
Probably should take the clutch apart and inspect the shoes and springs making sure the shoes aren't binding and the springs are strong,

While it's apart put a dap of grease about the size of your fingernail on the one way bearing
