Wireless audio solutions?

Anyone know of a clever and not-too-expensive way to stream audio from my laptop (a 5-year-old MacBook) to a stereo system on the other side of the room? The best solution would not require additional dongles for my laptop and would work system-wide (i.e. not just in iTunes). But realistically, I can probably deal with a small USB dongle or iTunes-specificity. Both would probably be annoying.

I have an old Airport Express that a friend gave to me, but I've never been able to get it to talk to my non-Apple wireless router. I can't just use the AE as my base station since the DSL modem is upstairs, away from the stereo. I suppose I could get an Apple-branded base station and then just use the AE, but I am curious if that's the best and most cost-effective way to go.

Any thoughts? Hearty thanks in advance.
