Maryland Motorized Bicycle Laws

Under Maryland law a motorized bicycle is considered a moped. A moped is defined as a vehicle with:

  • A motor & bicycle pedals for propulsion.
  • 2 to 3 wheels (1 wheel must have a diameter over 14 inches.)
  • An engine size of up to 50cc for combustion engines & no more than 1.5 HP.

License

You must have a valid drivers license or moped permit to ride a motorized bicycle in Maryland.

Registration

You are required to title your motorized bicycle and have an ORV decal in Maryland just like off road motorcycles and snowmobiles.
