I been looking off an on at tach options for a 2 stroke to use on the 66cc 2 stroke I want to run.

I found the following two.

https://www.banggood.com/13000-RPM-...r-Gauge-Universal-p-1043967.html?rmmds=search

I am not too crazy about the first one as it is red and blue LED back lit and I really don't need back lighting unless I was able to find a 60mph speedometer with led back lighting to switch my vintage plastic speedometer out for. The other thing is I need to verify as one guy left a 1 star review saying this is really a 4 stroke tach but listed for a 2 stroke.

The second one has no conventional lighting which I could care less about. It also states its for 4 cylinder 2 stroke (cant say ive ever seen a 4 cylinder 2 stroke motorcycle before) but the biggest thing is its a white face with a chrome housing. I really am looking for a black housing with a black face with white numbers and a orange needle.

So I ask what options have others found out there for an analog 2 stroke tach? I'm still looking but just not finding much since I am avoiding tachs that only go up to 7,000 rpm.

You will need auxiliary power with the ones listed

I chose this one for ease as I don't have any auxiliary power

Well I found the following.

If I got the 12V generator I found on Ebay I can use that voltage regulator/Rectifier to rectify the 12V AC to 12V DC as well as to regulate voltage out put to the electrical system. Only thing ran by this electrical system would be my lights and the tach.

But as far as digital goes, I prefer to keep away from digital as they are harder to read at a glance.

Will be great to see what you come up with

I'm hoping with the lights mine won't be so bad.

I had to give up on the tach at the moment. For right now I am working on other areas and will revist the tach at a later date. Not like it is going to be the end of the world to retrofit a tach on a completed build.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/231788289947
I use this one. it needs no external power and it's accurate. I know it's accurate because also installed my tiny tach in tandem and they both read the same RPM. The tiny tach is a little bulkier and I don't like the shape. It also needs no external power just wraps around spark plug wire. This might have been gone over later in this thread but I'm feeling lazy today and didn't read the entire thing. I'm guilty

...I hate those little square tach/hour meters.. I like the regular motorcycle-style tach and speedo gauges much better...
Is there any way to make a 4-stroke tach work accurately on a 2-stroke?

I'm a bit lost here - with no shift point to calculate with the tach, and no oil change to schedule with the hour meter, how are these useful on the 2-strokes?

I never said I /needed/ it, I just /want/ it. :) I'm putting on a temp gauge, and possibly a crankcase pressure/vacuum gauge as well. I just want to know exactly what the engine is doing. I want to know what the engine is turning at speed, so I can play around with gearing, and see what kind of effect gearing, speed, and rpm have on power and fuel economy and engine longevity. And the pressure/vacuum gauge to monitor the effects of porting, along with the temp. ...Just some of the ideas I'm toying with. And why not? I bet the first person who proposed putting a little engine on a bicycle was looked at as nuts when there are perfectly good motorcycles available. This whole hobby can be summarized by the phrase "Why not?"
