How do you arrive at your "normal" spark retard? How are you sure you hit the "optimum" amount?

You just copy the reliability based on (2-stroke) research of Japanese manufacturers, which has been thoroughly analysed over a great number of years.
There is no need to go through the research process a 2nd or 3rd or 4th time because it's already been done and the results are in.
 
great to hear that there is another cdi coming out from jag with more aggressive timing curves! i just want the total advance to match up better with the rpm. I can understand your viewpoint where with this greater advance, the less experienced would be blowing their stuff up.

anyway back to the original point of this thread, I have completed the rebuild of the bike finally.
