Hey there...:) So we're going to do this one properly..!

Originally, I was going to go with a dedicated board track racer, but this idea became a little too cost prohibitive. With the frames at around $350 USD, that would be almost $500 by the time it got to Oz. And that's not even with the tank. In reality I was probably looking at around $1k AUD just in the frame..!So what I've decided on now is a hybrid street/board track. GT-5 frame with double springer front end, board track style bars and seat set up. Best of both worlds..!

The idea is to have quality parts and running gear throughout, sourced from both bike and motorcycle brands. This thing will be fast so it has to be safe as well - plus it's not exactly legal to be riding these things on the street where I come from. It will be built around a Fred's Superhammer that I got customised with a 6cc decomp head, 17mm Delorto style PHBG carb, and RM80 exhaust. I live in a flat coastal area at sea level, so it will be turning a 30 or 32T sprocket - see how we go. Thinking of a dark frame colour (gunmetal grey??) that will be offset with anodised gold running gear and parts.

Anyway, here's a list of parts and specs with some photos of goodies I've been sourcing for a few months now. The frame is still around 2 weeks away but the hold up will be the forks. Anyone know where else apart from Bicycle Designer I can source Cuda Double Springer forks from..??!

Cheers
Crisco:)
  • Frame: Alloy GT-2A with pedal stool mount
  • Forks: Cuda Double Springer
  • Bars: Moon cruiser flipped

  • Carb: 17mm Delorto style PHBG with velocity stack
  • Ignition: Superoo sealed magneto with HD Lighning
  • Exhaust: RM80 Expansion (one in photo is KX80 but it's going on Ebay as it's wrong side)
  • Front Brake: Hydraulic SRAM Guide R 4-piston with SRAM 200mm Centreline rotor. Master cylinder will be swapped to gold anodised moto-x style
  • Crankset: Sugino RD2 Messenger 165mm 44T with sealed BB68

So..... Stuff and things have been busy but the build has slowed as I've been chasing some decent polished hoops. After an absolute sh*t load of research it appears there just isn't a market for plain polished rims anymore, particularly in anything above 25mm. My mate who owns my LBS can confirm this with being able to offer me every size, shape, and width in every colour from white to lime green, but sadly a very small amount of plain polished. Seriously, who the f**k wants white rims..?!?! Bloody MTBers... Anyway, with the polished rims that are available this makes them either A) cheap crap; or B) quality but waaaaaaay overpriced..!

f**k it I said - and just ordered myself a pair of these...:)

These are a pretty solid rim with a nice fat width for a 2.4/2.5" boot. I want to build a quality wheel that I can also get use on a 26er MTB if I need to. Just have to decide on black or polished spokes now. The rims are a peened anodised surface so definitely no chance of polishing these up..! Could, however, paint them the same colour as the frame (dark metallic grey)

So I'll throw it out there for comment... Black rubber; black rims (so far); dark metallic grey frame; plain/polished alloy bars, stem, cranks, chain ring, seat post, motor, and springer springs; anodised gold bling everywhere including chain tugs, throttle, levers, pedals, cabling, sprocket, and most importantly the hubs..!

So the question is.... black or polished spokes..?!?!?
I know, right... first world problems and all...

I like silver spokes on black rims, and they're usually easier to find replacements, but gold hubs demand black spokes. As long as they're still the DT Swiss Alpine III's ;)

I still don't know why you didn't go for the gold Halo SAS rims. No dealer in Australia?

Ha..! Sounds like a keeper. I hope she's your wife now..?!o_O

Yeah it was just one of those random EvilBay finds. Some guy was turning them up in his shed on a CNC in the UK and all he had left was 130mm. I use a 130mm on my roady anyway (although the geometry is a tiny bit different!), but given that my bars wrap towards me it should work fine...
I agree 100% , long is good when the bar is swept back..
under hard braking (especially with the brake system you have) it would be very weird sensation to have the grips actually rearward of the steerer.

(Although of course the feel of a bike's steering is a combination of both the stem/bar geometry and the fork angle/rake/trail. I find that it doesn't always work out the way I imagined so I do like to have a few alternative stems if possible and even the adjustable stems can be useful for checking things out before making a decision on stem choice.)

That link you posted was the only place I could see them listed in anodised gold and then the site went down. Couldn't see any in gold on the Halo website so stopped hunting...

As it happens, I had another quick look tonight and I've found a place over here that sells them..! Both the 36mm SAS and the 32mm Tornado. I need to double check as I think that colour may be old stock that's not manufactured anymore, hence why they're rare as rocking horse s**t...

I think a 2.4" on a 36mm may have chain clearance issues. The 32mm Tornado may be the go. If so, I'll have a set of Spank Spoon 32's for sale shortly.!

I can't imagine it making much difference to the width of the tyre at the shoulder, the <2mm (each side) difference is bead width. The Tornado is lighter but pretty similar to what you bought I think, but the very heavy SAS has the double eyelets that allow you to put oodles of tension in the spokes because both the walls are bearing the tension. Since you have only 32 spokes this makes sense to me.. more tension makes stronger stiffer wheels, stiffer wheels inspire confidence,
but I don't know if it is necessary for a board track racer to have seriously (heavy) bombproof downhill rims anyway!
I don't think there's anything wrong with the Spank Spoons, from what I have read about them. :)

No there isn't. My man at my LBS has built a fair few wheels with them but..... they don't match all the gold wank parts I already have:cool:

That's the other thing... I'm always going to build strong quality wheels, on a bike like this. But, the speeds that I'll be doing are actually slower than my fastest descents on my carbon clinchers which are 15mm ID with 25mm rubber..!

Man these rims are pretty sexy... Especially for the price..!

I've ordered a pair of Halo Tornado 32mm in anodised gold as well... See which looks better and stronger and flog the other pair off..

Holy Heavy Duty, Batman..!

Tornadoes are no longer being made so I scored a pair of SAS for $72AUD. These things are seriously solid..! Bit heavy at 760g each, but not overly concerned given the spokes and hubs I'm using.

Off to LBS on Monday to get them built. Will finally be able to continue with build:)
