Can you use cardboard? Gaskets??

Some people live in remote areas and don't have access or wheels to get parts, so they have to be inventive. Cereal box is the best. What are you using it for?
Fair enough. Last time I made one with cardboard was because the hardware store was closed and I couldn't make it into town.

The way I like to make then is to cut it out and then soak it in some oil so it swells up a bit. Then wipe it off and coat.it with a grease (I use a wheel bearing greese). The grease works to seal smal gaps the cardboard doesn't.

This kind of shipping box works good too. It's a little heavier than a cereal box.
