extracting power from my HF 52cc magneto ignition

Is this possible? How do the china girls get a 6 volt output? I know I need a rectifier but what kinda voltages are we talking? I can make a current and voltage regulator up to 5amps with lm338 chips. They can't handle hundreds of volts though. My volt meter went crazy when i got the probes near the engine.

You'd need to get a scope on the primary of the coil to see what kinds of voltages you're looking at - also to see if, like the happy time engines, that only one half of the ac cycle is used to generate the spark.
