Yeah, I've seen a lot of them around too - and only on pocket bikes and scooters.
I doubt that few pocket bikes or scooters make it to 1000 miles in their generally short lifespan.
That Fireball Jones reported having over 1000 miles in his gearbox seemed impressive to me, and I wanted his opinion as to how well it was holding up.
Staton makes a much larger, more robust, 5:1 drive that uses a double reduction gear train.
I would have thought that if these cheap little 5:1 reduction units held up OK, Staton might have chosen to build a similar but more robust 5:1 single reduction unit instead of the more complex item that he builds. That certainly would have been cheaper.
