NEW BUYERS ! Would you buy one of these motors ??????

This place is doomed if you guys keep it up.
Or just change the name of this forum to "Rack Mounts are great, and HT'S Suck" Forum.
I see a lot of you gents are in your 40's, 50's, but act like a bunch of............ oh, forget it.
Farewell.

Wow. Just wow. When did this place lose it's unity and become a battleground for scorned elitists? Meanwhile guys like me are just happy that a forum like this exists for MAB riders and fans.

well mate, ive got a grubee motor and its just one problem after another ;bolts, shearing off i tension head bolts ,striped a nut.and website says there the best motorgoing around

I am not trying to knock the cheaper systems. I paid more because I value out of the box reliablility. Over the years, (I think first one was back in 92'.), I have bought about six of these ones and they have never left me stranded. The guys who have my old bikes never came back to complain. I am unwilling to take the tinker time to replace the weak parts or be stranded by cheaper products.

A good kit with proper maintenance will not let you down. This current one I have now I bought the week before the last shuttle popped so that makes it 6 years old I think. If you can't afford one of these by all means get the cheaper kit and have a good time. Just don't expect maximum dependability.

To me this is the main factor in bicycle motors. The time and money you spend on fixing the cheaper systems just doesn't justify the cost savings. Would you go out and buy a high mileage older ford escort and expect dependability or value for any price? No, You're going to spend more on it in the long run because you have to replace parts that you otherwise wouldn't have had to if you just spent a little more.
This is in no way about rack mount vs. frame mount. It's about high quality vs. sub-standard. If you could get me a frame mounted engine that looked as cool as a happytime made by mitsubishi with an auto clutch and freewheel I'd be all over it.

If one is looking for a replacement vehicle as depenable transportation, I would venture the assumption it's not to be found in a $200 outlay for a kitted out bike.

For me, cost is a major factor in the decision. I remain disciplined in what I'll spend and yup I'm only interested in good, cheap fun.

Interests like this, with various types of enthusiasts involved, always end up with 'mission creep'.

I look at it this issue from a time perspective. I.e., how much of it can I save, and will the time I don't save be a viable trade-off in terms of being entertained.

So far I have probably only put about 150 miles on my Dax HT in about a month and had little trouble with any but the most minor of issues such as chain tension and fasteners vibrating off - all easily remedied issues. But in that 150 miles, the HT motor has saved me 4 hours of commuting time over non-motored biking. The reality however is that I am likely putting some of that time saved back into maintenance, but in the last two weeks, that's been barely more than 20 minutes screwing with the tensioner that keeps slipping. So we can knock that down to roughly 3-1/2 hours of time saved.

Granted, I don't have many miles on the setup yet, but 3-1/2 hours saved per month is worth allot to me. And at my current wage of $27/hr, it will only take a little over 1 more month of similar time savings for the economic utility of the HT motor to payback on my investment. A little over 300 miles or 8 hours saved, that's it. Anything beyond that is a positive return on my monetary investment from the perspective of economic utility (what my time is worth).

Frankly, I have spent more time cheesed over flat tires this last two weeks than anything else. It's gotten so bad that I have started taking a less direct alternate route with cleaner streets - leaving the MB parked with another flat for the last two days while I peacefully meandered to and from work on the $2 cruiser I just picked up from the local recycling yard. It has me thinking that any MB may be more trouble than it is worth for all the quiet stress free ride it provides. ;)

Yep thats my experience also.

Once I got everything in order the bicycle itself needed more maintenance than the engine, also because of flat tyres (maybe except a cracked fuel line near the filter, remedied with a pair of scissors and 2 minutes).

Spot on, I can't even share my experience with out a heap of negitive replys and assumptions.
I say assumptions because it is obvious that a lot of you have read a few lines of what I have wrote an assumed the rest, it is also obvious through out this forum that a lot of answers to peoples questions are assumptions and the main question is never read properly.

Things like this,

Sorry but this is yet another one of those simple examples where a HT engine dies from outright abuse. Even if the exact cause wasn't the connecting rod bearing/bushing going bad, at this rate your engine was going to die very soon anyway.

This not only points out you know nothing about internal combustion engines but also you assume I'm a **** head thats been riding my bike WOT for 6800 kilometres, lmao.

then.

Yes, there appear to be a fair number of immature, testosterone challenged speed demons out there in HT land, few engines will stand up to that for any lenght of time. But they are slow in getting the message it seems,or else they don't read the posts.

Another assumption and straight out you may have well just called me a w@nker

and

But as you try to improve on it your piston rings go and it won't start even when you put the old parts back in because the seal's not the same or any other reason.

then

I've blueprinted big blocks in my time and taken apart Caterpillar and Detroit Diesel engines and played with the Helixes on their fuel pumps so a HT rebuild is romper room stuff.

Your either lieing or you not a very good mechanic.

The best bit is there is 2 f^cking mods joining in on this, lmao says a lot about the forum.

Some of you need to pull your head out of your asses and stop thinking you know everthing and treating poeple like ****.
some good people on here and some knowlegable people, but to many wankers.

Adios

Meh.....as Willy the Shake once said, 'Much ado about nothing'.

Boys, with something as frivolous as this, there's plenty of room to allow people to post their opinions and be able to own them.
