Rocket-Key & Tanaka 40cc

i have the tanaka pf40 with 15mm carby, juice-box intake, and stalker exhaust, but an otherwise stock engine...driving a Golden Eagle kit. it's breathing very nicely right now with bolt-on tweaks, i won't be messin' with the guts tho because i need this thing to last me a good long time.

bike & rider is a heavy gvw & we're going on long runs...i'm taking it extra-easy on the GEBE belt on purpose...i've always been mindful of this so-called weak link during my build, and because of that, unless i screw something up myself, my average belt-life exceeds 5K...i like pedalin', so i'm completely ok with this.

i don't get to "experiment" with this...one engine, one bike, one chance...low-gearing and easy rolling, and getting there is what i have in mind, i don't need more speed but i'd like more torque in the high rev's...does a rocket-key apply? is an overall boost in performance a given? what's the effects on mixture & mileage?

stoopid questions? honestly, i dunno...i tried the 'board & scooter forums where they've messed with the tanakas for a while, and still don't know what to think. i'm not interested in doing stuff to my engine just because it's cool, and i don't wanna tweak anything that'll affect lifespan...

so can anyone help me please? i'd sure appreciate the straight scoop on this

The rocket key will give more power. Advanced timing will also add heat to your motor and you may need to adjust fuel ratio to help in cooling. You will probably need to run premium fuel. I am using a go-ped motor on my mb. They do not sell a rocket key for my motor because factory already advanced the timing 10 degree. I have to use 25:1 ratio and premium fuel.

Hi augi the rocket key is best bang for your buck! I will give you one if you want. contact me.The next best thing for low end gains is beleive it or not a x-can or ada muffler I allso have one of these if your interested. One more thing you might want to consider is a difrent clutch setup. Tanaka is based out of Seattle and you can get parts fast from them . Go with the tanaka tc47r clutch setup you will be surprised.I have a few more tricks up my sleeve if your interested. but for your money youcant beet the rocket key.Buy the way IO know how to make a howmade one thats just as good.allso if you change your plug I know the right one to use.:rolleyes7:

tom80, the extra heat yes...and since it's a fixed advance, i guess that's a problem thru the entire range...so, should i try this key, which i think i will, i'll use a cooler plug...and mayhaps i'll increase the oil a few points too.

mike, per our phone calls i'll be considering a few of your hints & i'm looking forward to trying the key when the time comes.

    thanks, guys :)

    A,
You and I aren't exactly best of friends but take this for what it's worth.
Rocket keys were designed for racers of pocket bikes and such. You know, guys with more money than brains. Not for someone with a one-shot; gotta get me there; can't afford to screw this up; this is my sole mode of transportation type guy.
    Tread accordingly. Use due diligence.
In short...I wouldn't mess with it.
    Good luck, regardless.

Sorry to double post. What increase in speed did you have on the stalker exhaust? Is it worth it?

yaknow, i haven't given this topic any thought for some time...din't do the r-key for the obvious reasons...i concur with Nuttsy, detrimental to lifespan & this isn't an experiment i can afford.

i no longer have the stalker can, it opens things up great, makes for a torque-y 40 yup, not much faster on topend tho (prolly would be if i up'd the carby capacity)...but WAY too loud for traveling thru one new town after another...looking for trouble when you live on the bike ain't a good idea.

still have the juicebox, still love it's limited effects on smoother idle and accelleration...and this PF40, after 12,000-plus miles, STILL starts on the first pull.
