Wheels Rear wheel problem!

So there I was on NB on Highland just passing melrose when I felt a wobbling from the rear tire and I thought, GREAT! I have another flat. I was at about 20 mph and I immediatly let go of the throttle to deccelarate. I looked at my tire and it was fine and noticed that the engine's chain came off. I put it back on thinking, That was easy. As I began to pedal I felt the same thing but it was more obvious that a small overlook had caught up with me. A few weeks ago I had noticed a small amout of play (1/8th of an in., maybe) in the rear tire which I wasn't sure was normal (still not sure). As well I saw some grease on the big sprocket near the center that appeared to be seeping through. I had read a thread about servicing the coaster brake and had intended to do it but family life overwhelmed me on my days off. I am a novice at best with bikes and it probably would have taken me a days (I'm a realist). What should I do? What would you do to fix this? Thanks all, peace to men of good will..

Geez!
Not trying to scare you but for it to be so loose as to make your chain fall off, it may be damaged. Take the wheel off and see if you can tighten the nuts up until it no longer wobbles and don't forget to get a pile of grease in there. The bearings may fall out on you so be careful. Also, grease can be used to hold them in place for you.
Anyone is welcome to correct me on this but I feel that the part the bearings ride on seem to stretch, thus the need to tighten them up every two or three months.

1/8" of play isn't normal....no play is normal.
Take your coaster brake fually apart(remembering how u did it)....clean everything....figure-out how it works....reassemble it again with the correct bearing tension.............use HEAPS of grease.New bearings bed-in,that's why u have them SLIGHTLY tight from normal.

sounds as if you need to check your (adjustment) on the cones
cones wrenches (a couple of thin wrenches) come in very handy

would also be a good time to take apart and grease
since we are wondering where that grease came from

as you ride that thing

I agree check adjustment/slightly tighten. Or your bearings took a carp. If your snug and your still have play/loose at the axle you need to go to plan B. Replace bearings, or get a different hub. Your rear sprocket didn't loosen on the rubber spacer pads did it?
