Large Ring Gear (Clutch pad holder) question...

Finally got the bike up and running this weekend, carb adjusted, chain figured out, etc. But the drive noise is killing me... Get up to speed and pull the clutch just to coast and it sounds like crap. Almost like metal on metal. There is no chain rub anywhere, checked and quadruple checked.

Taking the clutch cover off reveals no rub marks but the large ring gear is pretty sloppy when the clutch is disengaged. Is this normal? Pulled the clutch cover and removed all the pads, of which 2 were split in two, and that large ring gear is pretty loose with apparent means of adjusting...

So is it supposed to be loose like that??

yes, it is loose when clutch is disengaged - the bearings in it are crap - those bearing do nothing at all when the clutch is engaged, so no big deal since 99.9% of the time that the motor runs, the clutch is engaged
