How does the CDI work? Does it work by heat in any kind of way? Maybe the reason why my bike does not run right is because I have that little black box that the spark plug wire comes out of mounted too close to the engine.

Any electrical item works best in normal temperatures. Keeping it unnecessarily close to a heat source will shorten its life.

How does a CDI work. Try google, it works. CDI stands for capacitive discharge ignition.

The capacitor charges then releases it's charge on command, and like Skyliner sayes all electronic components hate heat...it's their biggest killer.

I always carry a spare CDI with me on long trips. Yes, although rare, failure does occur and has happened to me once already.
