In the original post the poster's use of the term screaming at 43 mph did not indicate alot of torque or rpm since with his setup 43 mph is only 7k rpm, and that being just above the engines rated out put which is normally asperated and stock muffler/no pipe is not what most would consider any real gains and in fact if he'd have gone up to a 36 or 40t he'd have gone faster with way better throttle response.
I run 11/30 gearing and trust me, it takes double the torque to pull that and be able to unload it up to 10-11k.
Below a certain rpm, depending on the timings, it's all engine until the ports come into play and trying to pull a smaller gear in this area properly takes more understanding of how to produce that torque than many will ever learn, and this is why their modified engine efforts don't produce what they thought they would and end up going slower than a good stock setup!
