Conneticut Motorized Bicycle Laws

The law in Conneticut defines a motorized bicycle as a motor-driven cycle and therefore a license is required.

A motor-driven cycle is any vehicle that has:
  • A seat height of at least 26 inches.
  • A motor under 50 cc.
License

You must have a valid drivers license to ride a motorized bicycle on the road in Conneticut. The earliest age you can obtain a license is 16 years old.

Registration

Registration of a motorized bicycle is not required so long as the motor is below 50cc.

Motorized Bicycle Requirements

Your motorize bicycle must have the following when riding in Conneticut:
  • Brakes
  • Lights
  • Horn
  • Mirrors
Other laws for riding a motorized bicycle:
  • If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must also wear a helmet while driving.
  • If the maximum speed of your vehicle is less than the speed limit of the road that you are driving on, you must drive in the right hand lane or on a usable shoulder on the right side of the road. The only exception is when you are making a left turn.
