When to know rag joint on sprocket needs changing?

put on properly, I've never seen one fail - hitting a lot of potholes can break spokes under it though, which means taking it off to replace the spokes on that side

The sad truth is that the rag joint may very well be the most durable part on any and all the happy time engine kits to date...

I agree, but it won't fix a warped sprocket which is common and will always give you chain problems.

Like I said, the rag joint (and no adjoining parts) is probably the most durable, even a warped sprocket can't break it.
