Kentucky Motorized Bicycle Laws

In Kentucky a motorized bicycle is defined as:
  • having an automatic transmission.
  • an engine of less than 50cc.
  • travel at speeds of no more than 30mph.

To ride a motorized bicycle in Kentucky you need to be at least 16 years old and you also must obtain a moped permit.

If you have a drivers license or motorcycle license you do not need a moped permit.

A motorized bicycle needs to be registered in Kentucky if you want to ride it on public roads, just like a motorcycle.

Other Motorized Bicycle Laws

  • A moped is not allowed on highways with a minimum speed limit above 30mph.
