Move the magnet by hand a few times bumping the wood with the piston, you can also try measuring the stroke. Theres probably not a lot of 38mm stroke engines still available but you can still find a few. Lower the piston to bdc and insert a stick, straw in to the cylinder as straight up as possible and mark the stick with a sharpie, then raise the piston to TDC and insert the stick and mark at the same reference point, measure the distance between the two marks. It won be precise but will be close.
