Sprockets Drive sprocket mounting for a HT kit

I was talking to a friend at a bike shop, and he mentioned the idea of using a disk brake rear axle, and mounting the drive sprocket to that. I dont have either in front of me and that makes it hard to compare, but has anyone tried to do this, or is it possible to get an undrilled drive gear?

If i can get a blank 44 tooth, with just the hub bore drilled, I can drill mounting holes on a press for the 6 bolt mounting.
