When installing new rings if there is any little pieces remaining down in the bottom by the crankshaft, will they do damage. Couldn't see anything with a flashlight
 
Yes if their in there they most likely will do damage,If your not going to split the case a real thurough flushing may help reduce the chance of further damage.
 
true, and take an old refrigerator magnet cut into a thin, bendable strip to feel around under crank cheeks for debris

Is what I have done take a small telescope magnet to fish it out.

Another thing you should do is remove the rotor magnet before flushing the engine. The rotor magnetizes the crank making it very difficult to remove all the metal debris. My method is to flush it 2 or 3 times with raw gas, then blast is out with a pressure nozzle on a garden hose, and a final flush with fuel oil mix.
