Windowed Piston?. Help

Hello. I'm new to this. What is a windowed piston? What does this do? Can't I use it without a reed valve? I'm thinking of opening a window in my own piston

You will most likely need a reed with a windowed piston. The windowed piston just allows a longer intake duration into the case.
