I came across this on the grubee website today.
SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THIS ISN'T TRUE.

Hay USA!! Important Note for the upcoming 2010 year:
In 2010, at least as of Nov. 5th 2009, non of the 2 cycle engine factories in China have been able to get their engines EPA certified to the new rating of 40CFR 1051.

Meaning; no 2 cycle bike engine shipments will be able to enter the USA after Jan 1. 2010 unless something changes. From Jan. 2008 to March 2009 the EPA rating has been 40CFR 90 off road non hand held but now changed to 1051 off road recreational vehicle which is the same class as a snowmobile. USA Import Buyers beware;

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WAKE ME UP FROM THIS NIGHTMARE:confused::confused::confused::devilish::devilish::cry::cry:

posting on a public forum to brag about oversize engines, unsafe speeds on a bicycle, and other violations is NOT what i'd consider "under the radar." as a group, we're behaving like pocketbikers, and we know what happened to them. pocketbikes don't make much sense as transportation, but our mechanically-assisted bicycles do...the old american way was to compromise on personal agenda & work together towards a common good.

the new american way is to pad your pockets as quickly as possible, and to heck with everyone else.

boy, there are some good ideas percolating up...what a fantastic discussion!

imo some of those ideas deserve their own new-topic inside "the green door"

I agree Augi, especially the ALMO idea needs it's own thread. People ,many times, just know when it's time to get organized. (I've been involved with my Local Union at work for years). BTW, thanks for the prompt PM. This motorized bicycle hobby obviously has some very talented and articulate enthusiests. A National Rally sounds like fun too. OOps! off topic once again! Def needs it's own thread! Lots of GREAT ideas here.

So when will places like gasbike.net start to run out of HT engines? And what will happen to these companies when their main product cannot be stocked anymore? (parts availability!)

There are only two options, go out of business or find a product line that is available. Capitalism in action, happens every day.

I have read quite a bit of this 29 page thread, and I may have missed it, but I have one questions that is not answered. Has anyone heard official word from Grubee, or one of the distributors about their plans for next year, and whether this ban will shut them down?

4 stroke kits using the HuaSheng 50cc will be the most affordable after HT's go away forever. (minimum $350 - or three HT kits.......)

Don't know if they can import parts to keep existing engines alive, or if they can import parts for a DIY kit. (assembled "short block", separate cylinder, head, etc.)

Grubee also sells four stroke kits that use engines that still fall under the old classification.

with plenty of othering offerings (current & legal) to keep them afloat, i don't see many makers lamenting the loss of the HT. i think 4-stroke based in-frames will always have a compliant option or two.

sidebar to consider: with it's new and improved position in mind, china itself may be wearying of exporting inferior engines (across the board) and prolly isn't caring too much about all this. some may recall, i once said that the label (to me) isn't about clean air so much as tariffs & taxes, and fair-trade as opposed to free-trade. a happy by-product of that un-happy process is that most "fair-trade" engines we use are really nice items.

If I may be allowed to regress just a little to the topic of state regulation of MB's. I've long noticed much very good legislation comes from Florida and if my understanding is correct, they have placed MB's in the same class as bicycles. That means they are legal without registration or insurance, with restrictions. Those being that an operators license (car or motorcycle) is required, 50cc & 25 mph max. I could live with that.

If we want to do that in other states, the people that did it in Florida could tell how they did it, a template, so to speak. No need to re-invent the wheel.

Real simple Kerf, It's warmer down there than in Buffalo NY... In the minds eye of the Police and lawmakers, HT's are more practicle transportation although they are no less practicle up here...

The climate appealed to the market and people scouped 'em up... Wasn't that necessarily people stuck together but there were a lot of them.

One should not even compare pocketbikes to our Bicycles... A great many of kids were hurt on those things up here. While I am a MB enthusiast, they have no business on the roads... It's plain to see in some cirumstances why our lawmakers feel they need to protect us, such as the case where a flip tard parent turns their 8yo loose on a pocketbike (sitting lower than the bumper of the adverage car) and cries he got run over...

With regard to the 49cc Federal law, some of us live in places where they could nail you one way or another as previously describbed by NY DMV deffinitions in previous post... I've got no problem obeying the laws when they make sense but why should I have went with a 49cc here? Common sense says any vehicle that approaches 200mpg should be legal!!! I bet if you follow the money, there's a lobby somewhere stuffing pockets in D.C., supporting the Ban in a closed door agenda. There's the enemy! Big oil maybe?
