I have this Raleigh C40 Cross Sport, a bike that doesn't quite know what it wants to be - it's not a Mountain bike, it's not a Road bike, it's not a Cyclocross-, Cruiser or BMX bike, I guess 'City' might be the best definition, got it for free from a former neighbor who barely if ever used it, so for the cost of a new chain (old one was a rusty mess) and tubes I have what essentially amounts to a new bike. It's not a bike I would have ever bought myself, but it is comfortable and actually much quicker than it looks and I'm kinda thinking it might make a good beater motorcycle.
However, the downtube is oversize, the top tube somewhat 'lady like' in downward slant, which results in a smaller than average diamond, meaning the engine would fit - with the universal U-adapter - but the carburetor doesn't, missing about 1 1/2" of space.
Any good experiences with offset intakes ?

There's nothing wrong with them, some guys chopped them off just before the second elbow and have the carb point out at an angle.
