What is a 'thrust' bearing and why is this important? Are you saying that you can replace the 'normal' bearings in a bicycle wheel with a sealed cartridge version?

Thanks! - John

thrust bearings are built to allow side to side loads (like in the wheels of a car). The rollers run on a cone that allows both up and down force as well as side to side force.

Cross section of a tapered roller bearing (thrust bearing):

Notice that the roller sits at an angle, so that force (usually in the hundreds to thousands of lbs) can be applied to the side of the bearing as well as up and down without it failing.

Ball bearings are usually used in applications where there are mostly radial forces.

That was one of the original complaints about the mag wheels from one of the threads above.. that the bearings weren't "safe" because they are not thrust bearings. What I've found is that many bearings used in a lot of high end bike wheel applications are also this same style of cartridge ball bearing.

As far as replacing bearings, yes many bike bearings can be replaced with cartridge style ball bearings. Boca Bearings has applications for many makes of bicycles for very high end ceramic bearings (as well as normal steel bearings). They even show cross section drawings of the bearings showing that they are a normal ball bearing design.
