Hey all,
During my first test run everything seemed fine except for the smell of burnt rubber. The clutch is operating properly and is in adjustment. I kept the speed to 15 or below the entire run. I did 3 miles, then another 3 miles an hour later. On both rides, I noticed the aroma of the rubber. Is this normal at first ? I hate to burn out a clutch so quickly.

Check your brake pads rubbing on yer tire. When your clutch is released, does your clutch arm still have some tension? You don't want that.

No tension on the clutch arm. And the brake pads aren't rubbing. I'll give it another go tomorrow. I will sniff the engine like a crazed maniac. :D

did you check the obvious? are the CDI and Magneto wires resting against the exhaust ???????. I know they are plastic but some may get confuzzzed.

Yes, I checked the tire/chain/wires. All is perfect.
I'm wondering if it was possibly my brake pads on the rear wheel. The pads are 14 years old (but like new) and with this clutch lever, I was using the rear brakes hard, while the fronts were going unused. I just ordered a dual pull brake lever for the right side, so now a single lever will pull both cables simultaneously. I also ordered another engine ( Kings 70cc)
Thanks for the responses. :)
I'll keep you posted.

Are most parts on the bike that old? Could it be the smell of burning old dried bearing grease in the axles? Just a thought. Check you left shoe and see if it's been resting against the muffler.;)
Good luck.

Funny stuff guys, with the shoe...lol. i always get that smell when I hand a plastic shopping bag off of my left handlebar on my way home from the store. Puts a hole in the bag and I lose my beer cans...lol. One time I got home with an empty bag.

update on burnt rubber smell?

Hey,
I know this thread is old, but I'm just breaking in my first build - an 80 cc happy time with a drum brake on the front hub and coaster brake in back - and I've been smelling burning rubber too.

Did you ever find out what it was? Did it ever stop ?

Curious,
