A friend of mine has recently purchased one of the gas bike reed and carb set up.

We can’t seem to find a decent starting point, it starts but just dies on full throttle, we have tried numerous size jets with no change at all,
Plug is wet and black after holding it flat
Tried 62 -80
And the one it came with was like 1.6! Bloody huge I thought?

He been given two different emolsion tubes I think it called but they are both different one shorter than the other?
I don’t have the link but I have a photo, any advice would be great, it’s a stock standard as you see setup with no port work done

I've seen several posts about reeds to stiff to open properly and others too loose to close properly, and I have no idea how to test those things. It may have nothing to do with carb at all.

Well that would make sense to why nothing changes with jet size...mmmm

Vacuum leak from black radiator hose some where take them off apply crazy glue cram back on tight the f*** out of them.
Also check for lose reed bolts vibrations cause them to loosen a crack giving one lot of mysterious problems.
Also did you remember to put the gasket seals on during assembly?
If your problem still exist take the reed off.
I took both the reed and air filter off and mine runs fine.

Thanks mate
It’s not actually my bike, I checked for a air leaks and all seemed ok

Will go back over what he’s done, but it’s been like this from new.

Yaw, I would say double check it make sure you did not forget the gaskets and the bands are tight and hoses fully on.
If not resolve contact the man who sold it to you to troubleshoot, maybe a refund might ensue, good luck.

An # 80 jet is way too small for that carb at w.o.t,The pilot should be around #47 or so too start with and main probably #115 and see if it still goes flat on top.

I haven’t had much of a look yet, but he got given some weird jet kit with a different length emulsion tube I think it’s called and various jets. The one jet that came in it he claims is a 160!? And that has a longer emulsion tube/jet holder what ever that fits that jet only.
He got all the parts from gas bike and did it himself. I’ve just offered to have a look at it.
Thanks streets, I’ll give it a go.

I may have trouble tuning my VM18 as well but haven't tried to run that engine yet too many problems with the spacer and bent studs. I'm going to run a stock motor on my predator frame for a while.
