Hello all. I am thinking of adding an electric motor to my "happy time" bike. I want it to add a bit of power to increase my acceleration and possible increase my top speed with the right gearing. Thoughts?

And an extremely powerful legal excuse, anyone challenging the legality of it on the road would have to prove it was under gas power and not electric. And engine can idle and with a locked clutch can make sound... Electric is electric...

Sounds like a good idea, I've thought of it myself for certain uphill climbs, would add just a bit more torque to help the gas engine. Can also get you moving from a stop without pedaling, and you can cleanly engage a clutch without having to slip it as you go to pull out.

If your hands could handle the burden of 2 different controllers at the same time then you might be able to do it, not even counting shifting braking clutch holding onto the bars...

I would invest in a dual brak lever to clean things up at the handlebars. Also I think it would be beneficial to get a shift kit. That would allow for more acceleration and leave the left side of the back rim open for the drive sprocket for the electric motor. I am wondering if I can use the wires from the gas engine that people connect headlights to as a way of keeping the battery charged.

Yea I have a duel lever wouldn't make sense to have 3 levers on a bar meant for 2 hands... If you have a centrifugal clutch then that's the only real excuse to use a separate lever for each brake.

I have read around on the forum and I've seen something like this has been done. I am not so sure if I would want any power going to the front wheel. It would probably be more tricky sending power from two different sources to the rear wheel but I am sure it can be done. If I had a shift kit installed I will figure out if I can route the power from the electric motor to the jackshaft instead of the rear wheel.

This is how I went about doing it! A 48v 500w rear hub motor and 66cc china girl and peddle power for a tri power hybrid! The 2 stroke engines output goes to a jack shaft and shifts the drive over to the right side and a 22t free wheel on the hub motor with a 12t ahead of it on the shaft and a 22t on the engine side! Then on the right side again there is a 16t free wheel on the shaft going forward to the peddle crank! Starting it requires kicking it over with the peddles but am now considering a bullet train electric start! These are the only pic I have of it right now but will take more when I work on it again,This bike is always just sitting in my back room and only gets worked on when I have time away from customer builds, repairs, and my other rides!

That is a sweet frame what is it? And that is exactly how I'd combine an electric and gasoline motor drive train on a bike.

The only alternate way might be a bottom bracket electric motor system, which might be compatible with a jackshaft.

Sorry not really sure what it is called or even who really makes it since it was purchased used in my case and the guy selling it just called it an electric chopper but it started out like this one then I swapped out the hub for 48v use and cut the back rest and added the passenger seat!

Way Way Cool. It looks like it could have started out as one of those stretched micargi puma 3.0's, then customized like crazy.
