Yep, I've always used a screwdriver - grab the handle nice and tight, place your ear against your fist and the pointy end of the screwdriver on the spot you want to check out. It's surprising just how well the sound transmits to your ear.

That stethoscope looks great, Ron. I'd love one. Might put it on my wish list. Would beat the screwdriver every time.
 
I had a little birdie for a while. I took the pin out that sticks out from the drive sprocket and put a wad of grease in there. Make sure that the ball doesn't fall out (if it does, just put it back in but, you don't want to assemble without it.) After I did that, my bird went to sing on another Happy Time. Hope it helps someone.
