It seems surprising in retrospect that this obvious? enhancement took so long in coming,all it took I think is a simple reed valve in the right place to admit the air.I suppose necessity still is the mother of invention!

Well, you also have to clean the air... the air for the pre-charge plus the air for the fuel/air mix both come through the common air filter/choke. The carb for the mitsubishi is a dual port version, but only the one port has jets. The other is straight-through. And, both the ports have a reed valve.
