I have been watching ebay for these 3 speed fixed gear hubs, but considering the prices, it makes more sense to convert an old aw hub or miniaturize a basic dog box transmission.

A basic description on the 2 fixed speed conversion from James Fairbrother further down the page sounds a lot easier than machining the bearing cup and planet cage, but that's still an option.

If I read Mr. Fairbrother's write up correctly these are the parts that need modified. As he doesn't provide engineers drawings or photos and the only example photos I can find of conversions are from the machined hubs, it would be best to remove only a little bit until a proper fit is possible.
the "diamond" on the pawl is fairly prominent and while the photo is of an alloy hub, the process is the same as with the old AW hubs, although the 60 series aluminum will be easier to grind than the case hardened steel of an AW hub.
RJ the bike guy's video on disassembly is the easiest to follow from what I have seen. And it wouldn't hurt to re-lube the hub while you have it open. I prefer packing it with grease to an oil bath. No weep or contamination of the bearings.

There was a guy on the other forum who had threading for a bmx metric freewheel cut into his s3x hub. And a 44 tooth 3 prong sprocket as well. He has it built up into a wheel and ran it like that. 3 speeds on the left, single speed right side. He never did post pictures of it though.
It would be possible to do the same on an old aw. Here's a photo of my hub, dated 1974.
