Newest Phantom 85 Information

Please share with us exactly what happened here...That piston looks just a wee bit bent out of shape...lol.

What kind of oil are you using and at what ratio???

Are you using a real inch pound torque wrench during the breakin after every ride or every other ride to correct specs to 144 inch pounds???

The last time I saw a piston that bad, the guy forgot to mix oil in with his gas...lol.
Yeah it's bad. Never had this much damage before, the only other thing that's close was when a circlip broke on my yd100.

I'm using supertech 20:1, I used a torque wrench on the head nuts, 144 inch pounds. Since things blew up so bad it's hard to say what caused it. I recovered one mangled circlip. The piston is stuck in the cylinder.

I will never ever trust the factory pistons as long as I live. Just saying...
I don't trust them either, never did. I used the stock one because I really don't care if it blew up, I'd just get another one. Didn't expect it to rip itself in half, though. Pretty sure the bottom end is ruined or will need a good cleaning or bearing replaced.

Oh, also I wanted to ask you what bearings you used for your engine, and if I can use the 1/2 drill bit 15mm deep trick on the crank to balance it? Both of my engines starting at 6k rpm vibrated enough to rattle my teeth out. If I get another one I'll build it properly like you did.

I do not ever use the circlips they send with these motors, I always use these, (pictured below), that I get at the local light and heavy duty equipment rental store as they always do their own motor work on their machines...I just take the jug with me and they fix me right up with these clips...They refuse to even charge me for them...lol.

I have never had one of these fail on me.

Crank bearings I used were FAG C3 spec with a 14k rpm rating (23k with no seals). Any c3 spec quality bearing will do the job.

As for the crank balance, yes you can use that method. It will get you at least 80% of the way there. I used that method to start but then adjusted for the weight of my windowed Meteor piston. It was fairly close before the adjustments and likely would have been more than adequate.

They actually highly recommend and prefer you use either Valvoline 2 cycle Racing Oil, or at the very least, Valvoline 2 cycle multi-purpose oil.
Funny thing is. My first tank was generic Mag 1 oil from the gas station and after that VP synthetic. They might like a particular brand of oil, but it doesn't make other brands wrong, nor does it being synthetic. s**t parts in = s**t results out.
