Tranny comparisons for frame mounted motors

Zombybuilder, love da pictures yo! Excellent presentation! I'm chomp n at th' bit to try installing another pocket bike engine................... (alot more potential!)......... EXCEPT, it will be bolted up to a mountain bike (mtb). I tryed this before last year...... with crappy results because th' gearing , as well as th' tire size didnt quite match. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but...........what if you CUT away(dremmel) just th' gearbox part of a happy time(?) china engine......... and weld th' smaller of the two gears in th' trans housing to a jack shaft .......the other end would connect to a pocket bike sprocket with chain........that finally connects with th' pocket bike engine. What do you think? sunofjustice (brian)

Shoulda Kept my Siezed Happy time

That is truly off the CHARTS Brian. I wished I still had my siezed happy time motor. I might try doing something like that. Oh well you might know how frustrated I was when after trial after trial that POS siezed up on me. It's at the bottom of the lake with the OTHER SLUGS----BAIT!!! Sleepin with the fish. I got a perfect mtn bike to tear up too... Gear a POCKET REAL LOW SO THE BAND KICKS IT TO 20. Then what????

I've seen in use, and have one on the way for a project, the old Albion kick-start, three speed trannys from pre '73 Rokon motorcyles in conjunction with Whizzer and briggs applications. Harder to find nowadays and the prices keep rising, but they are out there and really seem to work well. I personally have no 'hands on' experience with them yet, but these various other fellas I know really dig 'em. So that's a thought. What about transmissions from riding mower/lawn tractors? Any one looked into these or...?

Keep your eyes open for anyone parting out or tossing an old honda express 2 or honda elite from late 70's and through 80's.. these both have exc. cvt's on board that can be used. other ride on scooters might have these also.
recycle, save money, and go faster, you gotta love it!!

Some of those little motorized scooters kids ride on where they just stand on it are fast. I was behind a kid the other day with my bike wide open going 35mph, and I could barely catch up to him. I wondered if he had some kind of transmission on there, or those little motors can really go that fast on their own.

It would help a lot of us if someone gave step by step directions on installing a transmission. I plan on getting a 4-stroke motor in the next year, and a transmission would be nice. I won't have a problem putting one on as long as I know what to do.

Thanks for the information on the transmissions Zomby.

+1.

Cvt

I just spun out my CVT. The DDMotors 460 with the T.S. ported head & 15 to one piston was just too much for it. Sounds killer when it gets above 10,000 like a very Pi-ssed off Bee. Back to the drawing board. I got it up to about 7,000 in high range & it just started to freespin. I didn't know that a CVT could smoke... A gearbox has it's merit. I am going to go with a 4 stroke Whizzer motor. Do the gear reduction with the jackshaft & rear sprocket. I don't want to rile up my neighbors any more than I already have.

Is there any for a 5hp 3/4 inch shaft? I need a 3 to one or even 2to 1 reduction badly.
