The basic china doll has some good design features: internal gear reduction, ability to be bump started, simple assembly and design making it cheap to manufacture and cheap to maintain.
The achilles heel is really the poor standards of quality. But that's not a design problem, that's a business problem. It could never pay dividends to build a china doll to a decent standard compared to pure volume at this low a price point.
Regarding the jackshaft: I got mine working, but a better use of your money and time is on good brakes, considering a larger rear sprocket and simply putting in a good amount of your own leg power.
