My thinking on this is that you can get a healthy reduction with the friction drive, and use the output spindle to mount the roller.

Move the wheel fore and aft to put pressure on the roller? Moving the engine would work too but not as fast or easy. A QR wheel in track style drop outs? Maybe?

There was an engine kit called super bike mx5 or something that does this but with a 2 stroke.

Too many moving parts and a QR axle, not good. Rack mount with a belt drive to a roller underneath, once the belt gets tension the roller gets engaged.
