I just saw that new members must post here first... oops!

Well, I'm a cyclist and lover of air cooled engines.

I've had a desire for a motorcycle for about forever... and gas prices have put a damper on my will to drive my VW bus, so I'm looking to combine the two hobbies. (using gas prices as the excuse of course... grin) At the moment I'm thinking to cross breed a dead Tomos with an XR50 based chinese engine/transmission combo, and attempt to retain the pedal power option.

About me... Well I'm based in North Carolina and work on old boats/cars. I can weld, rebuild engines and most anything mechanical. Tend to bite off more than I should, and work through projects to an OCD level...

Welcome to the site, Zach! I think you've found what you're looking for, AND your mechanical and electrical know-how will be definitely welcomed on the site.

I like the way you explained the CDI interference with speedometers on another post--it was well put, and I think it's got my mind going about how to tackle that whole speedo-prob some of us are having...

There's a guy up here on craigslist selling an old VW bus, a volvo, and a motorized bike.

All 3 seem like hippie modes of transport. :)

Watch for trends.

I used to collect saturn s-cars, which if you believe the episode of the simpsons were homer learns "J" stands for "Jay", are the 90s version of economical transport for the people.

But these bikes are incredibly addicting.

You know, I've owned many vehicles over the years, but never had a VW bus. I had something better (and wish I still did), a Subaru 360 van. Two cylinder horizontally opposed two-cycle (self-oiling) 356 cc engine, 4 speed transaxle with reverse, suiicide doors, the works. Flat out it would go 50 mph on a level road with no head wind, but it got 60 mpg, it would carry 6 adults plus an unbelevable amount of gear, and it was just plain fun.
